McNeese Women's Basketball suffers 85-64 loss at NW State

McNeese women’s basketball team allowed Northwestern State to score 27 points off 18 Cowgirl turnovers in its 85-64 Southland Conference loss here Saturday. The loss drops the Cowgirls to 16-9 overall and 8-5 in Southland Conference play. Northwestern State improves to 14-10 overall and are also 8-5 in the SLC.

“We just got outplayed,” said head coach Brooks Donald Williams. “Their effort outmatched ours and that was disappointing. I know our kids were excited to play but there were moments when I thought we did some really good things then we would give up offensive boards. I thought that was the difference in the first half. There second opportunities and putting them at the line after their second opportunities really deflated us.” Williams said.

Jalyn Johnson led McNeese with 18 points on 6 of 13 from the field including three 3-pointers. Frederica Haywood ended the game with a double double. Haywood scored 14 points and grabbed 13 rebounds. Allison Baggett, despite staring the game 0 for 7, ended up with 14 points, 12 coming in the second half.

McNeese ended the game 25 of 60 from the field (9 of 24) three-pointers. The Cowgirls, the league’s third best free throw shooting team in conference games only connected on 5 of 7 free throws.

Northwestern State was led in scoring by Janelle Perez and Shahd Abboud, both ending the game with 19 points apiece. Keisha Lee pitched in with 14 points and Beatrice Attura added 12.

The Lady Demons outscored the Cowgirls 31-21 in the third quarter and led 69-54. McNeese did outscore NW State 19-16 in the fourth quarter but couldn’t stop the NW State offensive as the Lady Demons held their largest lead of 28 points with 8:53 to play.

McNeese began the game missing its first two shots and a turnover in its first three trips on offense and were 2 of 7 from the field with four turnovers in the first six minutes of the game. After the first Cowgirl basket by Jasmyn Carswell two minutes into the game, NW State went on a 5-0 run to take an 11-4 lead. The Demons then went on another run this time and 8-0 run including two threes by Janelle Perez as NW State opened up a 13 point lead.

NW State opened up its largest lead of the half with another run to take a 17 point lead. After missing her first seven shots of the game, McNeese’s Allison Baggett made her first basket of the game with a three-pointer with 49 seconds left in the second quarter. The Cowgirls’ top two scorers (Jayln Johnson and Baggett) were 5 of 16 from the field in the first half and McNeese didn’t help its cause by turning the ball over seven times. Despite being outrebounded by only two, NW State did score 15 second chance points.

McNeese will return home Wednesday to host Central Arkansas in it “Play for Kay” game to show its support breast cancer. The Cowgirls will sport pink headbands and pink shoe laces and will wear pink T-shirts during warm-up. Fans are asked to wear pink to the game to show their support as well.
