McNeese softball evened the series against #16 Baylor with a 3-1 win Saturday. The series will conclude with the rubber game set for 1 p.m. Sunday.

“I’m really proud of how the girls came out today. We let go of Friday’s game and learned from it,” said head coach Joanna Hardin.

Both teams had seven hits apiece. Tori Yanitor led McNeese with two hits going 2 for 3 and one RBI. Baylor also got two hits from Shelby Friudenberg who also went 2 for 3. McNeese committed two errors and Baylor committed three. Sophomore Jolie Trahan picked up her first win of the season and third career win after allowing seven hits, one unearned run, one walk and struck out one.

McNeese scored single runs in the first two innings to take a 2-0 lead. Junior Tori Yanitor singled to score Justyce McClain for the first Cowgirl run. McClain reached base by a Baylor error. McNeese’s second run of the game came with when Rachel Smith scored on a pass ball.

Trahan (1-0) held Baylor scoreless through the first four innings before Baylor cut the Cowgirl lead in half with a run in the fifth. A sacrifice fly by Linsey Hays scored Lindsey Cargill who reached base with a single down the right field line.

“Jolie was locked in and threw a gem. She kept Baylor off balance all day. I’m so proud of her and our offense for generating the run support for her,” Hardin said.

The Cowgirls got the run back in the top half of the sixth to take a 3-1 lead. Hailey Drew led the inning off with a single and advanced to second on a throw. A ground out to second by Erika Piancastelli advanced Drew then she scored on a fielder’s choice by McClain.

Trahan retired the next five Lady Bears before Shelby Friudenberg, Friday night’s hero who hit a walk off home run to give Baylor a 5-4 victory, singled down the left field line. Trahan got Hays to hit a grounder to Cowgirl shortstop Taylor Goree who in turn threw to second base to get pinch runner Riley Bowder out to end the game.

“We missed out on a few opportunities to take a bigger lead but we stayed the course and kept working.”
