McNeese Softball falls to #16 Baylor 5-4

All-American Shelby Friudenberg’s walk off home run in the bottom of the seventh gave the No. 16 preseason Baylor a 5-4 come from behind win over McNeese Friday in the first game of a three games series. The teams will meet again at 2 p.m. Saturday with the final game of the series set for 1 p.m. Sunday.

“Tonight was a tough one,” said head coach Joanna Hardin. “Our kids played very well and Emily (Vincent) threw exceptionally well against a tough Baylor Squad. I’m so proud of the girls for being relentless and never backing down. Regardless the outcome, there is a lot of positives from tonight to take into the rest of the weekend. I can’t reiterate how prod I am of the kids for how they played tonight,” Hardin said.

McNeese picked up five hits in the game led by two from Erika Piancastelli. Piancastelli also scored two of the four Cowgirl runs. Justyce McClain, Taylor Schmidt and Tori Yanitor all had one hit apiece. Yanitor’s hit was a double and one of Piancastelli’s hit was a double.

Jamie Allred picked up the loss in relieve of starter Emily Vincent after giving up the homerun to Friudenberg. Allred falls to 1-1 on the year. Vincent gave up three runs on four hits with three strikeouts and three walks in six innings.

Baylor ended the game with nine hits with two apiece coming from Sarah Smith and Caitlin Charlton. Baylor picked up six extra base hits including four doubles and a triple. Stearns picked up the opening day win for Baylor after giving up five hits four earned runs, two walks and struck out five in six innings of work.

McNeese headed into the bottom of the seventh with a 4-1 lead after breaking a 1-1 tie by scoring three runs in the sixth. The Lady Bears began the seventh with double off the wall by Jessica Scroggins. Jessica Tomchesson walked and Ari Hawkins singled. Scroggins scored on a Cowgirl error to cut the lead to 4-2. Jamie Allred replaced Vincent. Allred got pinch hitter Morgan Groppe to hit a grounder back to her for the first out before Friudenberg sent the first pitch she saw from Allred over the wall for the game winning hit.

Baylor took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a RBI single by Charlton. Linsey Hays scored after leading the inning off with a double to right center.

McNeese not only broke up a perfect game by Baylor’s ace Heather Stearns but the Cowgirls tied the game at one apiece. Piancastelli led the fourth inning off with a double off the left center wall. The Cowgirls added another base runner on a walk by Justyce McClain. Piancastelli and McClain advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Emily Vincent. A RBI single to third by Taylor Schmidt scored Piancastelli to even the game at one.

A three run sixth inning by the Cowgirls gave McNeese a 4-1 lead. After a strike out by Strickland, Drew walked and Piancastelli singled to left. A bloop single to left by McClain loaded the bases. Drew was thrown out at home on the next play on a fielder’s choice by Vincent. With the bases still loaded, Schmidt singled to third scoring Piancastelli for a 2-1 Cowgirl lead. McNeese extended its lead to 4-1 when Tori Yanitor singled down the left field line that scored both McClain and Vincent.

Baylor threatened to score in the bottom half of the inning after a Smith single with one out. Smith advanced to third on a Charlton double down the left field line. Vincent got Robin Landrith to fly out to left field and McNeese got out of the inning when Charlton got caught in a run down trying to steal third.
