McNeese State’s women’s remained in 11th place with a 316 on the second day of the Florida Gulf Coast Invitational. The final round Sunday will have an 8 a.m. shotgun.
McNeese continued to struggle with its short game, which also hampered the Cowgirls in the round on Friday.
“For the past two days, our short game has been an issue,” said head coach Mike Fluty. “We aren’t capitalizing on our good shots and we are failing to recover from errant shots.”
Kaitlin Fox looked like the player she was in the fall season. Fox fired a one over par 72 Saturday to move her into a tie for 25th place. No other Cowgirl shot the round in the 70’s. Kennedy Bodfield shot an 80 and is tied for 47th place. Sofie Winther shot an 83 (T52), Maiken Bing Paulsen shot an 82 (T56), and Hannah Valentine shot and 81 and is tied for 69th place.
“Fox regained the solid form she displayed in the fall with her 73. Hopefully, the others will follow her lead and step up their game tomorrow,” Fluty said.
Mercer continues to hold the team lead and distanced itself from the rest of the field with a second round 293 for a 594 total. Mercer is 18 shots ahead of second place Toledo (607). Elon is in third place with a 608 followed by Florida Gulf Coast (609), Xavier (610), Arkansas State (612), Southern Illinois 614), Central Arkansas (618), Ball State (624), Stephen F. Austin (629), McNeese (634), Florida Atlantic (638), Drake (643), Western Illinois (650), and USC Upstate (661).
Mercer’s Payton Schanen heads into Sunday’s final round with a four shot lead over Mei Khaun Yong of Florida Gulf Coast and Arkansas State’s Aracelly Jimenez. After a posting a first round 70, Schanen came back Saturday to post a 71 for a 141. Yong shot a par 72 in the first round and a one over par 73 today for a 145. Jimenez also shot a first round 70 but a 75 today also gives her a 145.
