Soccer Begins Tough SLC Weekend Slate vs Sam Houston Friday

Following a 2-1 double overtime victory over Northwestern State on Sunday, the McNeese State women's soccer team looks to earn its second-straight victory in the Southland Conference on Friday when it faces off against Sam Houston State at 7 p.m. at Cowgirl Field.

Friday night as well as the rest of the weekend will have a Geaux Pink theme in which fans are encouraged to wear pink clothing for Breast Cancer Awareness month. In conjunction with the event, fans will have an opportunity to make a monetary donation at the entrance gate that will go to benefit local awareness groups in the Lake Area.

The Cowgirls (4-5, 1-2 SLC) return home for one of its most challenging league weekend slates after making the long road trip up to Central Arkansas where they were handed a double overtime loss last Friday before bouncing back to defeat Northwestern State two days later to even their SLC record.

McNeese looks to capture its first victory at home since its season opener in August and to move up in the conference standings as it sits one place out of the six team minimum.

Leading the way for the Cowgirls are junior Bettina Brulhart and sophomore Gabi D'Alesandro who combine for five goals and three assists this season. McNeese has gotten goals from eight different players this season and have a game-winning goal from the forward, midfielder and defensive positions.

Sam Houston State (5-4-1, 2-1 SLC) enters the weekend ranked second in the league standings after coming off a two match split beginning with a 1-0 loss against Houston Baptist and a one goal victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The Bearkats are led offensively by Mariah Titus who has five goals and one assist on the year. Titus also leads the team in game-winning goals while six other players have scored a goal for Sam Houston State.

Friday's match marks the 13th all-time meeting between McNeese and Sam Houston State, with the Bearkats leading the series 7-5. Sam Houston has won seven straight meetings against the Cowgirls.

McNeese will wrap up the weekend with Stephen F. Austin on Sunday afternoon with kickoff slated for a 1 o'clock start.
