The Contraband
McNeese senior free safety Wallace Scott has been named this week's Southland Conference Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced on Monday.
Scott recorded a game-high seven tackles in the Cowboys' 28-14 win at Stephen F. Austin this past Saturday, but it was his 97-yard fumble recovery and return for a touchdown that changed the momentum of the game within the first couple of minutes into the first quarter.
Facing a second-and-goal with the ball inside the 1-yard line, SFA quarterback Zach Conque attempted to leap over the line and into the endzone. He was met by linebacker Bo Brown whose helmet dislodged the ball. Scott scoped it up and sprinted the other way for the score.
It's the second-longest fumble return and the sixth-longest scoring play of any kind in school history.
Also on Monday, McNeese (2-0) moved up four spots to No. 17 in this week's FCS Coaches' Poll while breaking in at No. 25 in the STATS Top 25.
The Cowboys will return home this Saturday to face Mississippi College (2-1) of the Gulf South Conference at 6 p.m.
McNeese will recognize first responders at the game in conjunction with the 10th Anniversary of Hurricane Rita. All first responders can purchase tickets for the special price of $10 with a valid ID.
