Softball begins fall season this weekend

McNeese softball will open its fall season this weekend Sept. 26-27, by hosting its own Cowgirl Fall Classic at Frasch Park in Sulphur.

The Cowgirls will open tournament play against Jones County Junior College at 10 a.m. Saturday on field 1. McNeese will face Trinity Valley Community College at 10 a.m. and Baton Rouge Community College at noon Sunday. Both games will be played on field 2.


McNeese returns 14 letter winners from its 2015 team including All-American catcher Erika Piancastelli. Piancastelli will be joined by returnees in seniors Taylor Goree, Emily Vincent, Taylor Schmidt and Jamie Allred. Also returning will be juniors Marisa Taunton, Rachel Smith and Tori Yanitor along with sophomores Shanice Hagler, Hailey Drew, Morgan Catron, Jolie Trahan, Haley Perkins and Shelbi Strickland.

The fall season will be the first collegiate competition for seven freshmen (Taylor Edwards, Morgan Hardy, Megan Holmes, Justyce McClain, Megan Trahan, Aubree Turbeville and Lauren Wyble).

The rest of the fall schedule has McNeese hosting San Jacinto College on Oct. 2, Lamar State-Port Arthur on Oct. 3, LSU-Eunice (Oct. 7) and Galveston Junior College (Oct. 22). The only road game in the fall will be at LSU on Oct. 16.
