McNeese Softball defeats Abilene Christiana 5-1 in rubber game

McNeese softball defeated Abilene Christian 5-1 here Saturday in the rubber game of the Southland Conference series to take the series 2-1. The win lifts the Cowgirls’ record to 26-7 overall and 11-1 in the SLC. Abilene Christian falls to 13-17 overall and 7-5 in the SLC.

The Wildcats took the early lead off a solo home run by Peyton Hedrick that hit the top of the outfield wall for a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. McNeese responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning off one hit and two ACU errors.

McNeese added two more runs in the fourth on a single by Morgan Catron and a RBI sacrifice fly by Tori Yanitor.

Cowgirl starter Emily Vincent struck out the side in the sixth and seventh innings to end the game with her second most strikeouts this season with 11. Vincent improved to 9-2 on the year with the complete game victory. Vincent gave up four hits, one earned run and walked two.

The Cowgirls ended the game with four hits and were led by two from Marissa Taunton. Taunton scored two of the five runs.

McNeese will travel to Houston Wednesday for a 6 p.m. game then will return home on the weekend to host Nicholls in a three game series beginning Friday.
