McNeese Banners presents Canadian folk band

Staff Reports
The Contraband

Canadian folk band, Vishten, will perform at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 16, in F.G. Bulber Auditorium at McNeese State University as part of the 2016 Banners at McNeese season.

The band is comprised of three creative musicians who have been crafting their own brand of new traditional music and a trademark sound that combines original compositions and traditional French-Acadian songs with driving rhythms.

Group members Pastelle and Emmanuelle LeBlanc and Pascal Miousse have become a distinctive and powerful international voice for traditional music from their native islands of Prince Edward and Magdalen off Canada’s east coast. Both islands have a shared history and cultural ties that date back several centuries - the tale is of early French Acadian settlers seeking a better life in the new world.

Since forming in 2000, Vishten has released four albums, won numerous awards and has played more than a thousand performances in more than a dozen countries throughout Europe, Australia and North America.

Accomplished multi-instrumentalists and singers, the band members weave together a unique blend of fiddle, guitar, accordion, harmonium, whistles, piano, bodhrán, jaw harp, Moog, electric guitar and percussive dance to produce traditional and contemporary sounds.

Due to changes with the new sales tax that took effect April 1, ticket pricing will be adjusted and tickets will go on sale closer to the event. The concert is still free to McNeese and Sowela students with ID.
