The McNeese softball team combined to hit four home runs in its Southland Conference doubleheader win Friday (8-0, 11-0/5 inn.) to complete the series sweep over Houston Baptist. The Cowgirls improve to 22-6 overall and 9-0 in the SLC. McNeese will travel to Southern Miss next Tuesday and South Alabama on Wednesday.
“We are really grateful for a good weekend,” said head coach Joanna Hardin. “We gelled together in the second game today. We have been fortunate enough to be able to move some kids around in different positions and they have really done a good job all around.”
The Cowgirls used the long ball to get things going in the opening game. Piancastelli hit a line drive shot over the centerfield wall for her 12th home run of the season for a 1-0 lead. The second run of the game for McNeese came off a HBU error before Emily Vincent hit her fourth home run of the season in the fourth that gave McNeese a 3-0 lead.
McNeese blew the game open with four runs on four hits in the fifth to take a 7-0 lead. The first run of the inning came off an error. Morgan Catron’s single brought home two more runs and a Tori Yanitor double to left center scored the fourth run of the inning.
Allred (8-1) threw a gem and retired the first 12 batters she faced before giving up a walk in the fifth inning to spoil her perfect game. Allred gave up her first hit of the game in the sixth to pinch hitter Brooke Bushman.
McNeese picked up nine hits in the game and was led by Vincent and Yanitor who both had two apiece. Both Yanitor hits were doubles.
The Cowgirls picked up their seventh SLC run-rule win of the season in the second game to complete the sweep.
McNeese scored single runs in the first and fourth innings, three in the third before exploding for six in the fifth. McNeese scored 11 runs on 13 hits with 11 RBI including three homeruns, two from Piancastelli and one from Vincent. The two home runs in the game by Piancastelli give her 14 on the season. Vincent now has five on the season. Piancastelli also ended the game with four RBI. Vincent was 3 for 3 with a triple and a double. Also picking up extra base hits was Shanice Hagler and Justyce McClain, both hitting doubles.
Rachel Smith improved to 6-1 on the season with the three hit shutout. The shutout is her third of the season. Smith also struck out four and didn’t allow a walk.
“Jamie and Rachel both threw extremely well. They had their rhythm from the first inning and were locked in pitch by pitch.”
Smith helped her cause by picking up two hits, two RBI and scored a run.
“We will enjoy a short break for Easter to spend some quality time with family and friends,” Hardin said. “We have a really tough week next week as we hit the road to play Southern Miss and South Alabama before returning home to host a good Abilene Christina team next weekend.”
