The Contraband
David Sears, a veteran troop commander for the Naval Special Warfare Development Group, will share his more than 20 years of experiences at 7 p.m. Friday, March 11, in the Contraband Room of the Lake Charles Civic Center as part of the 2016 Banners at McNeese State University series.
For 20 years, Sears served in the most elite special operations force in the world, the U.S. Navy SEALs. His vision and mission-oriented leadership produced results in the most demanding and dynamic environments.
A decorated veteran, Sears planned, led and executed hundreds of special operations missions in more than 40 countries on five continents with extensive management experiences in international and multicultural environments and unique expertise in building dynamic teams and maximizing results.
As a troop commander, he led the ground assault on an Iraqi paramilitary stronghold to organize the first successful U.S. prisoner of war rescue since World War II. In the jungles of Colombia, Sears played a vital role in the planning and execution of Operation JAQUE, the successful rescue of U.S. and Colombian personnel held for more than five years in captivity by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia.
In addition to his role as a tactical and operational leader, he has also led strategic efforts focused on solving major national security problems. He has briefed the Secretary of Defense, chairman of Joint Chiefs of Staff, director of the CIA, director of the National Security Agency, director of National Intelligence and the National Security Council. He has also addressed many ambassadors, executive-level leaders at U.S. combatant commands and foreign partner nations.
His military decorations include the Bronze Star of Valor, three Defense Meritorious Service medals, a Meritorious Service Medal, a Presidential Unit Commendation and more than 35 campaign, unit and personal awards. Sears is a distinguished graduate of Naval Post Graduate School with a Master of Science degree in defense analysis.
Tickets will be available at the door at $20 for adults, $5 for students and free to McNeese and Sowela students with IDs. Military veterans will also be admitted free to this event.
