FAYETTEVILLE, Ark.— It was another tough day for the McNeese volleyball team Saturday at the Arkansas Invitational. The Cowgirls dropped both matches to extremely tough competition in Kansas and Army West Point.
“We are really grateful for the opportunity to play three great teams this weekend,” said head coach Ashleigh Fitzgerald. “We are pleased with our play, the effort, and we absolutely believe we will be better for taking part in this tournament. Our kids aren’t hanging their heads, they know we are going to be better than this.”
The Cowgirls opened the day with a straight set loss to Kansas (25-9, 25-14, 25-10). Sophomore Ray Myers, who was named to the all-tournament team, once again led the Cowgirls on offense with eight kills. Kelly Graham dished out 12 assists and freshman Bridget Justis was credited with 11 digs.
“I’m so proud of Ray (Myers). She was outstanding all three matches and we relied so heavily on her,” Fitzgerald said.
McNeese concluded tournament action by falling in four sets 3-1 (25-19, 19-25, 25-14, 25-23) to Army West Point in a hard fought match to close out its opening weekend with and 0-3 record.
Myers, for the third straight match, led McNeese in kills with a career high 17. Four Cowgirls recorded double figure digs with Justis leading the way with 19. Malina Sanchez pitched in with 16, Hailee Showers had 14 and Graham tallied 11. Graham led McNeese with 39 assists and Bridget Hudgins had a team high four blocks.
McNeese will return to action next Tuesday when they will take part in the Ole Miss Tri-Match.
