McNeese SAGE Program Offers Tabasco Tour and Lecture

From Staff Reports
The Contraband

Spots are available for a special tour and lecture by Dr. Shane Bernard titled, “The Tabasco Story at Avery Island” from 7:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14, at the Jungle Gardens in Avery Island as part of the fall McNeese State University SAGE series.

Cost is $99 for SAGE members and $158 for all others and does not include lunch.

Bernard will present a behind-the-scene look inspired from his book, “Tabasco: An Illustrated History,” which explores the origins of the Tabasco sauce and its evolution throughout history. Through untapped photographs and documents, he also captures the unique history of the McIlhenny Company, the family behind the “gold standard” of pepper sauces and a global culinary icon.

Bernard is the historian and archivist for the McIlhenny Company. A native of Lafayette, he earned degrees in history and English from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and his doctorate in history from Texas A&M University.
