McNeese softball scored 10 runs off nine hits to open Southland Conference action with a 10-1 run-rule win over Sam Houston State (5-13, 0-1 SLC) Friday night. The series will conclude with a 3 p.m. doubleheader Saturday.
“I’m proud of how the team came out tonight,” said head coach Joanna Hardin. “Our goal as an offense is to put pressure on the defense and pitch every inning and we did a good executing that tonight. What I like most about tonight is that we scored six of our runs with two outs. As coaches, we expect our kids to compete every pitch and scoring with two outs is very indicative of that,” said Hardin.
McNeese (14-5, 1-0 SLC) scored at least one run in all but the third inning. Morgan Catron and Taylor Goree led McNeese with two hits apiece. Goree and Hailey Drew accounted for two RBI’s apiece. Emily Vincent improved to 5-1 on the year with the complete game victory. Vincent was dominate in the circle, giving up two hits, one earned run, 10 strikeouts and didn’t allow a walk.
“Emily threw very well tonight. We talked through our plan and she did a great job executing and commanding the zone. She understands her job and what she is trying to accomplish with every hitter. She’s throwing with a lot of confidence right now and it is fun to watch her compete.”
The Cowgirls scored early and often as they opened up a 4-0 lead after two innings with a run in the first off a wild pitch and three runs in the second inning on three hits. Goree, Shanice Hagler, and Marisa Taunton all picked up RBI’s in the second inning.
After Sam Houston State scored their only run of the game in the third off a solo homerun. McNeese got the run back on Goree’s second RBI of the game for a 5-1 lead.
Another three run inning for McNeese in the fifth extended the lead to 8-1. One run came via another wild pitch and the other two runs of the inning came from a RBI double to center field by Drew.
Back-to-back home runs in the sixth by Erika Piancastelli and Catron capped off the scoring for the Cowgirls to seal the win.
“This game is funny and it keeps you very humble. Sam Houston State is always a competitive series for us and we expect them to come out tomorrow with energy and fight. We will turn the page on today pretty quickly and prepare for tomorrow.”
