McNeese softball opened the Texas Tech Invitational with an 8-4 win over Ohio University here Thursday night to improve to 11-3 on the season. McNeese will face UTSA at 12:30 p.m. and Texas Tech at 5:30 p.m. Friday.
Despite trailing early, McNeese bounced back to outhit Ohio 12-8. Four Cowgirls picked up multiple hits and the Cowgirls had six extra base hits and six RBI.
“Ohio definitely came out and threw the first punch tonight,” said head coach Joanna Hardin. “It was great to se our team stay calm and work back into the game one at a time. I’m really proud of how the offense responded after we wend down three runs in the first inning.”
Ohio took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first on four hits and a Cowgirl error. McNeese came back to tie the game with three runs in the second on four hits. The Cowgirls opened the inning with three straight hits including a lead off double by Tori Yanitor. The Cowgirls pushed three runs across the plate to tie the game at three all on a Marisa Taunton RBI and a pass ball.
A run in the third gave McNeese a 4-3 lead off an Ohio fielding error that allowed Taylor Goree to score the go ahead run. The lead didn’t last long as Ohio would get the run back in the bottom of the inning with a lead off solo home. The long ball would chase Cowgirl starter Jolie Trahan from the circle to be replaced by Emily Vincent.
“Taylor Goree played phenomenal defense tonight. Ohio has a lot of speed and Goree made some big plays that helped shut them down. She has been so consistent for us at shortstop and her leadership on defense keeps everyone calm in pressure situations. We have so much confidence with her there and she deserves a lot of credit tonight in addition to her two knocks at the plate, “ said Hardin.
McNeese tacked on three more runs in the fourth to take a 7-4 lead off the bat of Morgan Catron who hit a three run shot over the left field fence. The long ball is her second of the season.
McNeese added an insurance run in the seventh when Hailey Drew led the inning off with a triple and came home on a single by Tori Yanitor.
Vincent shut down the Ohio offense in relief of Trahan, holding the Bobcats scoreless and allowing only two hits and four walks in the final five innings to pick up the win to remain undefeated at 4-0 on the season.
“We have our work cut out for us this weekend, the next four games will be just as challenging as tonight’s was.”
