The Contraband
Author Erin Entrada Kelly of Philadelphia, Pa., will give a free reading at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 17, in Stokes Auditorium of Hardtner Hall as part of the 2016 lineup of Banners at McNeese State University.
Kelly is the author of two children’s books, “Blackbird Fly” and “The Land of Forgotten Girls,” both from HarperCollins. She is a two-time Pushcart Prize nominee and a finalist for the Philippines Free Press Literary Award for Short Fiction.
Since its debut in 2015, “Blackbird Fly” has earned three starred reviews and was selected as a 2015 Southern Independent Booksellers Alliance Best Book of the South, 2015 Indie Next Pick and 2015 Junior Library Guild selection. The book was called a "true triumph" by Publishers Weekly and "remarkable" by Kirkus Reviews. “Blackbird Fly” was also featured as recommended reading in the Chicago Tribune's 2015 Children's Read & Write Program and was named a Best New Release by the Children's Book Review.
Her second novel, “The Land of Forgotten Girls,” was just released this month and her third novel, “Virgil & Valencia,” is scheduled for release in 2017.
She currently works as a publicist at Smith Publicity, one of the leading book publicity firms in the U.S.
A native of Lake Charles, Kelly worked as a journalist at the American Press for 10 years, where she earned more than a dozen awards for news, feature writing and community service journalism from the Louisiana Press Association and Associated Press Managing Editors.
She also served as associate editor at Thrive Magazine—where she continues to work as a contributing editor—before relocating to the Philadelphia area. Kelly received her bachelor’s degree from McNeese and her Master of Fine Arts degree from Rosemont College in Pennsylvania.
