McNeese Volleyball defeats Prairie View in straight sets in home opener

McNeese volleyball opened its home slate in fine fashion Tuesday night with a straight set (25-10, 26-24, 25-7) win over Prairie View to improve to 2-7 on the season.

“It was great to be home in front of a really big crowd,” said head coach Ashleigh Fitzgerald. “We continue to make a few lineup and schematic adjustments and the kids continue to adapt really well.”

Senior Malina Sanchez was error free on the night as she led all players with 10 kills and a .476 hitting percent on 21 attempts. As a team, the Cowgirls committed a season low eight errors and picked up 12 block assists. McNeese ended the night with a .350 hitting percent including a .571 percent in the final set.

Senior Kelly Graham continued her steady play by dishing out a match high 30 assists along with eight digs. Junior Bridget Justis also continued her solid defense by picking up a match high 10 digs.

The Cowgirls opened the match with a 5-0 lead before Prairie View would get on the board. The Cowgirls continued their dominance throughout the set, nearly holding the Panthers to single digits. A kill by Amber Fryer gave the Cowgirls the first set victory.

In the second set, it was Prairie View who took an early lead (6-1) and held as much as a 12-9 lead. The Cowgirls clawed their way back and eventually tied the set at 19 all after outscoring the Panthers 5-2. Both teams exchanged points until the Cowgirls tied the set again at 24 all. A service ace by Rebecca Korenek gave McNeese a 25-24 lead and a monster kill by Malina Sanchez gave the Cowgirls the second set victory.

McNeese ended the match with a dominating 25-7 third set win after jumping out to a 6-1 lead. McNeese went on to outscore Prairie View 14-5 to take a 20-6 lead. Rae Myers took control of the set at the end and scored three of the final four Cowgirl points off kills.

The Cowgirls will travel to Laramie, Wyoming this weekend to take part in the Wyoming Invite. McNeese will return home next Tuesday to host Jackson State.
