Student Government President Davante Lewis told the Senate
on Wednesday that each of the fees that were approved in the fall will now go
before the University of Louisiana system board.
“The Board sets a timeline of how early we can have our
election,” Lewis said.
“We have made a tentative schedule. We would like to have the election on the
timeline that the board requires,” he continued.
Lewis did not give out a date for the fee election, saying
that the date they’ve been looking towards would need to be approved by the UL
Board.
“Hopefully by the next meeting we’ll have a date,” Lewis
said.
5k could cost $100k
Students looking for a Wipeout style experience could have
their chance on McNeese campus, according to Senate Pro Tempore A’reneica
Mumford.
It’s called a ‘Hit and Run 5K,’ a kind of obstacle course
slash race. “It’s something that I
really want to see come to the University,” Mumford said.
That is, if the college can come up $100,000.
“We would have to put down a payment of $25,000, and then
have registration. $75, 000 is too much
to raise if we could get the community involved,” Mumford said.
Other Senate business
Kay Julian with Alpha Kappa Alpha presented S14-01, a bill
asking to fund a portion of a trip to the sorority’s 82nd Regional
Conference in Dallas.
“This will give us a chance to unite with several of our
chapters in different regions, and a chance to learn how to empower young women
and ourselves as better leaders in our community,” Julian said.
Alpha Kappa Alpha is hoping to send eleven members to the
conference, for a total cost of $2,359.
The bill would fund half of that, at $1144. The Senate voted to send the bill to the
Financial Budget Committee for further review.
The McNeese chapter of the NAACP presented S14-02, a bill
that looks to fund a trip to for the organization to Washington D.C. NAACP President Tony Antoine presented the
bill.
“The chapter will be traveling to Washington D.C. at the end
of this month. We have been invited to
the Woodrow Wilson Academy,” Antoine said.
The total cost of the trip, Antoine indicated, would be
$3929. The bill is requesting
$1929.
There was a motion to suspend the rules to approve the bill
in full, bypassing the Financial Budget Committee’s review process. However, that motion failed to pass a Yay or
Nay vote. The bill was passed to FBC for
review.
