Cowgirl softball take down UAB for first win in Mardi Gras Invitational

McNeese Cowgirls softball had a successful start to the
season going 3-2 in the opening tournament of the season. Standout preformances by Kim Kennedy and
Lauren Langner earned them both all-tournament team honors. Kennedy was also
named Southland Conference Softball Hitter of the Week. Kennedy ended the
weekend with a .727 slugging percent and a .647 on-base percent.
The Cowgirls picked up their first win of the South Alabama
Mardi Gras Invitational by beating 21st ranked UAB 5-3. The Cowgirls
tied up the game at one a piece in the 5th inning When Alanna
DiVittorio hit a homerun to left field. The game was taken to extra innings in
which McNeese was able to take a 5-1 lead. UAB tried to come back but fell
short giving the Cowgirls a 5-3 win.
In the second game on Friday the Cowgirls fell to Austin
Peay 7-3.The Cowgirls had a 2-1 lead after the third inning but they were not
able to hold on. With single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth and three in
the seventh Austin Peay took a 7-2 lead. McNeese was able to score one more in
the seventh on a solo home run by Modzelewski.
McNeese started out on a strong note on Saturday with a
rematch against Austin Peay with a 16-1 rout. The Cowgirls had a 12-1 lead
after the first inning and were able to score four more in the third.
The Cowgirls ended play on Saturday by falling 4-1 to host
South Alabama. South Alabama scored all their runs on home runs.
The Cowgirls ended the weekend on a high note defeating
Syracuse 12-3. The Cowgirls trailed 3-1 after four innings but scored four runs
in the fifth to take a 5-3 lead. McNeese scored four runs in the sixth and
three in the seventh to finish off the Orange.
